Album containing 39 original photographs of previously taken photographs of Macedonian guerillas of the Vnatresna Makedonska Revolucionerna Organizacija (IMRO), in their struggle against the Ottoman Empire; includes photographs of detachments at bivouac, various leaders and officers, such as Maria Bouneva, Damian Iovanov Gruev, Boris Sarafov, Ivan Garvanov, and Khristo Tatarchev, one photo of casualties at the summit of Nojot near Prilep, and one loose photo showing a crossed revolver and dirk on an open bible; undated but ca. 1900-1910, with later captions in French, stamped "John Bakeless Personal Property".

John Edwin Bakeless was born on December 30, 1894, in Carlisle, Pa. He married Katherine Little in 1920. Bakeless attended Williams College (1914-1918) and, though his final year was not completed because of enlistment in the army, received his bachelor's degree in absentia in 1918. At the end of World War I, he embarked on graduate studies at Harvard University where he studied Philosophy (M.A. 1920) and English (Ph. D. 1936).
